Remembering

She moved her fingers along the spines of the books, feeling their weight underneath them. Scanning for a book she hadn’t read yet, she remembered all those years she had spent in the library, always looking for something new to read.

She tried to remember the first time she had walked into the place, but her mind shut down, like it did every time she tried.

“Lucy!” a sudden voice called at her from the back of another room.

She suddenly stood stock still, as a thought shot through her brain. That’s not my name. And then, after six years of silence, the memories finally came flooding back to her. She sunk to the ground, desperate not to lose the earth beneath her feet, though she knew it had left her all those years ago.
