Left Behind

He stared through the fence, his heart fracturing into a thousand pieces. There, beyond that fence, his golden retriever lay, howling for him to come back. He waved one last goodbye, then turned his back on the dog as tears started forming in his eyes.

He was moving across the ocean to New York and there was no way he could take his old dog. Though he yearned to turn back, apologize and take the dog back, he knew there was no way.

As he drove his car to the airport, his mind kept wandering back to the dog. A sudden pain hit his chest and he nearly doubled over. He had no way of knowing that at exactly the time the pain hit him, his dog breathed his last breath after being euthanized.

  1. This made me cry. 😥

    1. I’m sorry! It’s a terrible thing to happen to both the dog and his former owner… I felt like crying myself when I wrote it!

  2. Wow what a heart ripper and an awesomely worked ending. I can relate to this piece a lot.

    1. Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed it, though it’s definitely quite a heart ripper. I hope I haven’t caused too many tears here…! 😉

  3. Aw, that’s such a tear jerker. The connection of owner and dog a physical and measurable thing. Like many old couples, they were at heart connected and could not live without the other.

    1. I agree with you. It’s such a terrible thing to have that connection ripped apart.
      Thank you for reading!

  4. You ripped my heart to shreds! But what a strong heartbond they had.

    1. Oh dear! I hope your heart shall mend soon 😉 It’s awful their heart bond was ripped apart so violently.
      Thanks for reading and commenting!

  5. This was heartbreaking! But a very powerful way to show the bond between the two!

    1. Thank you!
