The Burial

“Didn’t you bring a shovel?”

“Shovel? You never said anything about a shovel!”

“A paint brush? Are you kidding me? What the hell are we meant to do with that?”

“You told me to bring a paint brush and a lamp!”

“How are you planning on burying the body with a paint brush?”

“I don’t know…”

“Well, go ahead, get shovelling with your darn paint brush then. I’ll get the body from the trunk.”

“You want me to dig… with a paint brush?”

“You’re the one who brought it, dimwit! Now go get to work.”

Setting the lamp aside, he awkwardly began digging with the paint brush, then tossed it aside and used his hands.

There was some shuffling, heavy breathing and twigs snapping, then the other came into view, dragging a corpse towards them. Suddenly there was a thump and the flame died.

“The lamp! You tripped over the lamp!”

“Then get it burning again!”

“I thought the lit lamp would be enough… I didn’t bring any more matches…”

  1. Haha.
A collection of imbeciles. Makes me wonder if they intended to kill the guy.

    1. It was probably merely an accident..! 😉

  2. The Cask of Morontillado.

    1. …I’m a little mystified as to what you’re referring to. Do you mean it reminds you of the Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allan Poe? I’ve only heard of that short story, but I’ve never read it myself.

      1. Sorry, didn’t mean to be obscure. The reference is to the Cask of the Amontillado. Kind of similar, although CotA involves live entombment. But your protagonists were such bumblers I couldn’t pass up the bad pun, by trying to slip in the word “Moron”.

Here is the story at Project Gutenberg:

      2. Ohhh now I get it! *facepalm* Thanks for clearing that up – it is true, they acted like complete morons, and who knows, they were clearly being very badly prepared for the burial – maybe it was a live entombment… and they just hadn’t realised yet that their body was only unconscious 😉

  3. Not very prepared, are they? 🙂

    1. Hahaha nope, definitely not! They should have been a little more thorough with their preparations. 😉

“The best laid planes of mice and men . . . ” I mention this because if well laid plans go awry then certainly so do plans not made well, as you write in your story. I laughed when he started digging with the paint brush. Great job!

    1. That’s definitely true! Thanks for your comment once again, and I’m glad you enjoyed it 🙂

  5. The start of a very dark tale! Excellent,

    Here is my FFftPP

    1. Thank you, I’m glad you enjoyed it 🙂 I’ll check yours out later!

    2. I just checked out yours – I tried commenting on it, but I’m not sure whether it worked.. Either way, it was a great piece! I really loved it.
